What Next

Your next step is to submit a short story. It could be handwritten or it could be typewritten. It could be on email or any kind of disc. You should send it to:

Your story can be on any subject. It can be aimed at children, it can be a ghost story, it can be a love story, a horror story, a true life story.

Count the words in your short story before you submit it and write the exact number at the top of the story.

We cannot return any text, discs or pictures. So always keep copies.

We will examine your short story and respond to you. Give us an e-mail address or a landline phone number, so we can contact you as soon as possible. If we like your short story, we will contact you and tell you that we want to accept it for publication.

If you have problems with presentation or spelling and grammar, advise us in a covering letter and we will be able to help you. But if you do have problems with your English, do not let this deter you. Many good writers never get published because they are too embarrassed by their own poor English.

We firmly believe that writing talent isn't dependent on excellent English - it's far more dependent on whether a person has a gift for storytelling. Because of this, we provide a support service for writers to prepare their stories for publication. When we have read your short story we will consider it and decide whether it can be published in a forthcoming short story anthology.

When - and only when - your short story is accepted for publication alongside other talented UK writers, we will contact you. At this stage, the £89 fee will be due (make cheques payable to United Press). This payment will ensure that your short story:

  • is accepted for publication.
  • will go into print in an anthology.
  • will also be put on the website at www.shortstorysociety.co.uk prior to publication, for the public to read and enjoy.
  • that you will receive five copies of the finished volume of short stories (we don’t pay royalties but you retain copyright, so you can publish it elsewhere without needing to ask us).
  • that we will register the book with the British library.
  • that we will send copies of the book to the other major regional libraries in the UK.
  • that you can buy extra copies of the book at a discounted rate.
  • that we'll ask you to submit other short stories for us to consider.
  • that we'll give you a 40 per cent discount on producing your own book.
